NewsMalawian social worker to assess MadonnaA social worker from Malawi will travel to London next week to assess Madonna's suitability to adopt a child from the African country. The official, Penstone Kilembe, said Madonna was "looking forward to this so her adoption process is not hampered". In a further twist to the ongoing sagag, he added that the government had reversed an earlier decision preventing him from visiting the star. He said blocking his visit could have jeopardised Madonna's attempt to adopt David Banda, the child she was granted custody of last October. At that time Malawi was criticised for fast-tracking Madonna's adoption process. She was granted an 18 month interim custody order enabling her to take the baby out of Malawi until officials decided whether or not she should get full adoption rights. According to Reuters, Kilembe said that the refusal of Kate Kainja, the Malawian minister of women and child development, to grant him permission to assess Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie's suitability to adopt the boy could have caused the entire process to "crumble". Kainja was reported in a Malawian newspaper as saying that Kilembe had "personalised the whole issue" and that she felt other officials should make the assessment in his place. But Kilembe will now make the trip himself. The proposed visit will last for two weeks from September 4. The adoption will only receive final approval when the country's authorities are satisfied that the child is being properly looked after. Joanna Newsom to perform with LA Philharmonic Joanna Newsom has announced that she will perform with a full orchestra in Los Angeles for the first time this autumn. The acid-folk harpist will be joined by the 28-piece Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the renowned Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 9. The rare performance will feature orchestral arrangements written by Van Dyke Parks, known for his work on The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' and Brian Wilson's 'Smile'. This will be Newsom's first orchestral performance since her orchestral debut with the London Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican last January. Tickets go on sale August 26.
